FEHR-ah-ree TREHN-toh
Italy's leading Metodo Classico house since 1902, setting the benchmark for Trentodoc sparkling wines from the Alpine foothills of Trentino.
Ferrari Trento is Italy's leading producer of Trentodoc traditional-method sparkling wines, founded in 1902 by Giulio Ferrari in the northeastern Alpine region of Trentino. Passed to the Lunelli family in 1952, the house now produces approximately seven million bottles annually and holds around 24 million bottles aging in its cellars. Ferrari has been named Sparkling Wine Producer of the Year at the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships five consecutive times and eight times overall.
- Giulio Ferrari, born in 1879 in Calceranica al Lago (then part of the Austrian County of Tyrol), founded the house in 1902 using Metodo Classico with wines aged four to five years
- In 1952, Ferrari sold to Bruno Lunelli (1907â1973), a Trento wine shop owner; production at handover was just 9,000 bottles per year
- Annual production is approximately seven million bottles; the house holds around 24 million bottles aging in its cellars
- Trento DOC was established in 1993 as Italy's first traditional-method sparkling wine designation; the collective Trentodoc brand was launched in 2007
- Ferrari Brut is made from 100% Chardonnay and ages 20 months on lees; Ferrari Perlé, first produced in 1971, ages an average of 54 months on lees
- All estate vineyards received organic certification in 2017; Ferrari also holds Biodiversity Friend certification from the World Biodiversity Association
- In June 2023, Ferrari appointed Cyril Brun, former Chef de Caves at Charles Heidsieck, as its new Chef de Caves, the first time a Champagne cellarmaster had joined an Italian winery as full-time enologist
Origins and Founding Vision
Ferrari Trento was founded in 1902 in Trento by Giulio Ferrari, born in 1879 in Calceranica al Lago when the region was still part of the Austrian County of Tyrol. Ferrari studied at the Istituto Agrario di San Michele all'Adige and then undertook study trips to Montpellier, Geisenheim, and Ăpernay, where he became convinced that the terroir of Trentino closely resembled that of Champagne. He returned home, planted the region's first documented Chardonnay vineyards, and in 1902 produced the first bottles of traditional-method sparkling wine in Trentino. In 1906, he won a gold medal at the International Exhibition in Milan. When Ferrari chose to retire in 1952, he passed the winery to Bruno Lunelli, a Trento wine shop owner, who was producing just 9,000 bottles per year at the time.
- Giulio Ferrari attended the Istituto Agrario di San Michele all'Adige before studying further in Montpellier, Geisenheim, and Ăpernay, leading him to plant Trentino's first Chardonnay vineyards
- In 1902, the first bottles of classic-method sparkling wine from Trentino were produced; a gold medal at the 1906 Milan International Exhibition confirmed their quality
- Trento DOC was established in 1993 as Italy's first traditional-method sparkling wine DOC; the collective Trentodoc brand was officially formed in 2007
- Giulio Ferrari introduced Chardonnay to Trentino; the region is today the largest Chardonnay-planted zone in Italy
Why Ferrari Matters
Ferrari's founding ambition was to produce an Italian sparkling wine capable of competing with the finest French Champagnes, and that goal has shaped every decision across more than a century of production. The Lunelli family, which has run the house since 1952 across three generations, has amplified that founding spirit: Ferrari now exports to over 50 countries, serves as the official sparkling wine of Formula 1 since the 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, and is poured at state dinners, Michelin-starred restaurants, and prestige cultural events around the world. Ferrari has been awarded Tre Bicchieri by Gambero Rosso 22 consecutive years and named Sparkling Wine Producer of the Year at the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships eight times, including five consecutive years through 2025.

- Ferrari wines have received Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso 22 consecutive years; Wine Intelligence has named Ferrari the most recognised wine brand in all of Italy
- Trento DOC is the second sparkling wine DOC in the world after Champagne, a distinction that underpins Ferrari's credibility as a serious rival to prestige Champagne houses
The Portfolio and How to Identify It
Ferrari F.lli Lunelli S.p.A., operating as Ferrari Trento or Cantine Ferrari, produces six distinct ranges: Classic, Maximum, Perlé, Riserva, Gran Cuvée, and Limited Edition. All wines are Trentodoc Metodo Classico, identifiable by the Trentodoc consortium seal on the back label alongside the distinctive Ferrari house emblem. The entry-level Ferrari Brut is a 100% Chardonnay non-vintage blanc de blancs aged 20 months on lees, delivering ripe golden apple, white flower, and bread-crust aromas. Ferrari Perlé is a vintage blanc de blancs aged an average of 54 months on lees. The Riserva Lunelli is the only Ferrari wine whose first fermentation takes place in large Austrian oak casks, adding body and roundness, and it ages at least seven years on lees.
- Ferrari Brut: 100% Chardonnay, non-vintage, 20 months on lees; ripe golden apple, white flowers, delicate yeast, and bread-crust on the finish
- Ferrari Perlé: vintage 100% Chardonnay blanc de blancs, first produced in 1971, aged an average of 54 months on lees with Ferrari's own selected yeast strains
- Ferrari Riserva Lunelli: the only Ferrari wine fermented first in large Austrian oak casks, aged a minimum of seven years on lees; sourced from the Chardonnay vineyards around Villa Margon
- Giulio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore: 100% Chardonnay from a single special vineyard, aged a minimum of 10 years on lees; produced only in exceptional vintages
Flagship Cuvées and Expressions
Giulio Ferrari produced three of his best-known cuvées as blanc de blancs: Ferrari Brut, Perlé, and Giulio Ferrari. The range has since expanded, but these three remain the house pillars. Ferrari Perlé, launched with the 1971 vintage, has achieved extraordinary success year after year and is considered the icon of the Ferrari style. At the summit sits the Giulio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore, sourced from a single special vineyard and aged on the lees for a minimum of 10 years, a wine widely regarded as one of Italy's greatest sparkling wines. The Riserva Lunelli, fermented in large Austrian oak casks and aged at least seven years, adds an oaked dimension unique within the portfolio.
- Ferrari Brut, a Trentodoc non-vintage blanc de blancs made from 100% Chardonnay, is the house's most widely recognised label and a consistent Tre Bicchieri winner
- Ferrari Perlé, first made in 1971, is a vintage blanc de blancs aged an average of 54 months on lees; the 2007 vintage won World Champion Sparkling Wine Outside of Champagne at the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships
- Giulio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore is a 100% Chardonnay riserva aged over 10 years on lees, released only in the finest vintages; the 2015 vintage received 98 points from Wine Enthusiast
- Ferrari Riserva Lunelli, the house's only oak-fermented cuvée, undergoes primary fermentation in large Austrian oak casks and is then aged a minimum of seven years on lees

Ferrari sources Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from around 100 hectares of certified organic estate vineyards and works with more than 500 additional growers who follow the house's strict sustainability protocol. Vineyards are planted between roughly 250 and 800 metres above sea level in the foothills of the Dolomites, with soils rich in calcareous debris and limestone, underpinned by magmatic and metamorphic rock including schist, gneiss, and rhyolite. The wide diurnal temperature range generated by Alpine conditions preserves high acidity and aromatic complexity in the grapes. All estate vineyards achieved organic certification in 2017 after a process that began in 2014; Ferrari also holds Biodiversity Friend certification from the World Biodiversity Association.
- Estate vineyards are planted between roughly 250 and 800 metres above sea level; the wide Alpine diurnal range preserves natural acidity essential for long lees aging
- Soils are rich in calcareous limestone debris with an elevated siliceous component; deeper layers include schist, gneiss, rhyolite, quartz, and feldspar, contributing mineral complexity
- All Lunelli family estate vineyards received organic certification in March 2017, following a transition that began in 2014; the estate is also a certified Biodiversity Friend
- Trentino is today the largest Chardonnay-planted zone in Italy, a legacy directly traced to Giulio Ferrari's introduction of the variety from Champagne around 1900
The Lunelli Family and Contemporary Standing
The Lunelli family has guided Ferrari across three generations. Bruno Lunelli and then his children Franco, Gino, Carla, and Mauro built the house into Italy's leading sparkling wine brand. The third generation, comprising Matteo Lunelli (President and CEO), Alessandro Lunelli, Marcello Lunelli, and Camilla Lunelli, has expanded Ferrari's international presence and deepened the commitment to sustainability. In June 2023, Ferrari made global wine headlines by appointing Cyril Brun, the two-time IWC Sparkling Winemaker of the Year and former Chef de Caves at Charles Heidsieck, as its new Chef de Caves, the first time a Champagne cellarmaster had made the move to an Italian winery as a full-time enologist. Ferrari Trento is the flagship of the wider Lunelli Group, which also includes Tenute Lunelli, Bisol, Segnana grappa, Surgiva water, and the two-Michelin-star restaurant Locanda Margon.

Ferrari Trentodoc wines are defined by high natural acidity and fine, persistent perlage derived from Alpine mountain viticulture and extended lees contact. The Ferrari Brut NV opens with ripe golden apple, white flowers, and delicate yeast, with a clean, balanced palate and a hint of bread crust. Ferrari Perlé shows greater complexity with Reinette apple, almond blossom, citrus, and toast-like autolytic notes, and a velvety, sustained finish from 54 months on lees. The Riserva Lunelli adds honeyed golden fruit, toasted almond, and spice from oak fermentation, while Giulio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore develops extraordinary depth and mineral persistence after a minimum decade on the lees. All wines maintain precise, refreshing acidity that balances richness and supports extended aging.
