Etude Wines

ay-TOOD

Etude Wines was founded in 1982 by Tony Soter in Carneros, producing cool-climate Pinot Noir that challenged California's ripe-fruit conventions. The estate's Grace Benoist Ranch, developed after an 18-year search for ideal terroir, anchors wines sourced from Carneros, the Central Coast, Oregon, and New Zealand. Only two winemakers have led Etude since its founding.

📖History and Founding

Tony Soter established Etude in 1982 with a single Pinot Noir and a conviction that great winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before harvest. The winery challenged prevailing assumptions that California Pinot Noir must emphasize ripe fruit and high alcohol, helping to establish Carneros as a world-class Pinot Noir destination through the 1980s and 1990s. After an 18-year search for ideal terroir, the Grace Benoist Ranch estate vineyard was developed in 2000. Soter sold Etude to Beringer Blass, now Treasury Wine Estates, in 2001 and remained as a consultant until 2007. Since founding, only two winemakers have led the winery: Tony Soter and current winemaker Jon Priest, who joined in 2005.

  • Founded 1982 with a single Pinot Noir; one of the earliest voices for restrained, terroir-driven California Pinot
  • Grace Benoist Ranch vineyard developed in 2000 after an 18-year search for the right site
  • Sold to Beringer Blass (now Treasury Wine Estates) in 2001; Soter consulted through 2007
  • Jon Priest has been the sole winemaker since 2005, with over 20 years of industry experience

🌊Terroir and Vineyard

Etude's estate sits in the northwestern corner of the Los Carneros AVA, a cool-climate region where San Pablo Bay fog and maritime breezes keep temperatures approximately 10 degrees cooler than the rest of Napa Valley. The rolling hills range from near sea level to roughly 400 feet elevation, with well-drained, rocky upland soil of volcanic origin. The Grace Benoist Ranch is planted to over 20 Pinot Noir clones, including 9 heirloom selections, and two-thirds of the property is dedicated to preserving wetland and woodland habitats. Beyond the estate, Etude sources Pinot Noir fruit from Carneros, the Central Coast, Oregon, and New Zealand, while Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Rutherford, Oakville, and Coombsville.

  • Los Carneros AVA runs approximately 10 degrees cooler than the broader Napa Valley due to San Pablo Bay influence
  • Volcanic-origin, rocky upland soils promote drainage and concentrate vine stress
  • Over 20 Pinot Noir clones planted at the estate, including 9 heirloom selections
  • Fruit sourced from Carneros, Central Coast, Oregon, New Zealand, Rutherford, Oakville, and Coombsville
