Santo Spirito (Etna Contrada)
SAHN-toh SPEE-ree-toh
A north-slope contrada in Castiglione di Sicilia at 700 to 750 metres on deep volcanic ash; one of Tenuta delle Terre Nere's six premier-cru bottlings and a single-letter Contrada S in the Passopisciaro series.
Santo Spirito sits on the north slope of Mount Etna in the commune of Castiglione di Sicilia, immediately east of Feudo di Mezzo at 700 to 750 metres of elevation. The contrada is distinguished by gently curving terraces and deep volcanic-ash soils, almost exclusively ash with very loose, dark surface texture. Tenuta delle Terre Nere holds 7 hectares here, with vines from 60 to 100 years old yielding around 6 tonnes per hectare, the largest of the estate's seven north-slope contrada holdings. Andrea Franchetti's Tenuta di Passopisciaro bottled a single-vineyard Contrada S as part of his original single-letter series, with the Passopisciaro descriptors emphasising the soils formed from eruptions in the 1600s. Palmento Costanzo also produces a single-contrada Etna Rosso from this site.

- Both Etna Rosso (Nerello Mascalese-led) and Etna Bianco (Carricante) are bottled from Santo Spirito by Tenuta delle Terre Nere
Location and Position
Santo Spirito sits on Mount Etna's north slope in the commune of Castiglione di Sicilia (Catania province), immediately east of Feudo di Mezzo and west of the Solicchiata-Linguaglossa axis. The vineyards run from roughly 700 to 750 metres above sea level, sitting between the lower 600-metre core of Calderara Sottana and the upper-altitude cluster (Guardiola, Rampante, Barbabecchi) at 800 to 1,000 metres. The contrada is distinguished visually by its gently curving terraces (rather than the steep stepped terraces of higher sites) and the green grass that covers much of the soil between vine rows in the spring. The north-northeast exposure looks down toward the Alcantara River valley, and the slope is gentle enough that vineyards can be worked with hand tools rather than the dedicated terrace techniques required higher up.

- Vineyards from 700 to 750 metres elevation; between the 600-metre core (Calderara Sottana) and the upper-altitude cluster (Guardiola, Rampante, Barbabecchi)

Soils and Geology
Santo Spirito's defining geological feature is its soil composition: the contrada sits on deep volcanic ash, almost exclusively, with the very loose dark surface texture that the deep-ash north-slope sites share. Tenuta delle Terre Nere describes the contrada as terreno vulcanico, profondo, quasi esclusivamente di cenere, in contrast to the stoniest sites like Calderara Sottana where black pumice and basalt rubble dominate the surface. Passopisciaro emphasises that the substrate here is built on lava flows from the 1600s eruption cycle, which is older than the 1947 lava that touches Guardiola but younger than the deep Elliptic-volcano substrate of Calderara Sottana. The deep, ash-driven, low-stone profile is unusual in the contrada catalogue and produces wines with a softer, more fluid texture than the harder, more structured wines from the stonier sites.
- Deep volcanic ash, almost exclusively; very loose, dark surface texture
- Distinct from the stoniest sites (Calderara Sottana with surface pumice and basalt) and the 1947-lava-touched Guardiola
- Substrate built on lava flows from the 1600s eruption cycle per Passopisciaro descriptors
- Soft, fluid texture in the wines; less structural hardness than the stonier neighbouring contrade
Wine Style
Santo Spirito Nerello Mascalese is the more textural and approachable register of north-slope Etna red, distinct from the structural depth of Calderara Sottana, the iron austerity of Guardiola, and the lifted high-elevation Rampante. The wines tend to read as red cherry, raspberry, and rose petal over a soft, ash-driven mineral base, with finely grained tannin that integrates earlier than the harder neighbouring contrade. Tenuta delle Terre Nere's Santo Spirito single-vineyard from old vines is the most-distributed commercial reference and shows the contrada's fluid, perfumed expression most clearly. Passopisciaro's Contrada S follows the house style of long maceration in stainless steel and large-format Slavonian oak, with the 1600s-lava substrate producing what the producer describes as more aromatic and less harshly mineral than the Contrada P (Porcaria) or Contrada G (Guardiola) bottlings. Palmento Costanzo's Santo Spirito Etna Rosso is a third commercial reference. Tenuta delle Terre Nere also bottles a Santo Spirito Etna Bianco from Carricante on the same parcels.
- More textural and approachable register of north-slope Nerello Mascalese; red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, soft mineral base
- Finely grained tannin integrates earlier than the harder neighbouring contrade
- Tenuta delle Terre Nere Santo Spirito (old vines): the most-distributed commercial reference; fluid and perfumed
- Three commercial references: Tenuta delle Terre Nere, Passopisciaro Contrada S, Palmento Costanzo Santo Spirito; plus Etna Bianco from Carricante on Terre Nere parcels

Tenuta delle Terre Nere holds 7 hectares of Santo Spirito, the largest of the estate's seven north-slope contrada holdings, with vines aged 60 to 100 years and a working yield of about 6 tonnes per hectare. The Santo Spirito single-vineyard is part of Marc de Grazia's premier-cru series alongside Calderara Sottana, Guardiola, San Lorenzo, Bocca d'Orzo, Moganazzi, and Feudo di Mezzo. The estate also bottles a Santo Spirito Etna Bianco from Carricante on the same parcels. Tenuta di Passopisciaro produces Contrada S as part of Andrea Franchetti's original single-letter Contrada series (C, G, P, R, S), with the Passopisciaro descriptors highlighting the 1600s-lava substrate as a key distinguishing feature. Palmento Costanzo, the Solicchiata estate that revived its 19th-century palmento winery for modern winemaking, produces a single-contrada Santo Spirito Etna Rosso that has become a third commercial reference for the contrada in the modern market. The contrada's central position and its broad usage by major north-slope producers make it one of the most accessible Etna single-contrada labels in the international market.
Translucent ruby with the more textural and approachable face of north-slope Nerello Mascalese. Aromas of red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, dried Mediterranean herbs, and a soft volcanic-ash mineral base. The palate is medium-weight with finely grained tannin that integrates earlier than the harder neighbouring contrade, the appellation's high acidity, and a fluid, perfumed finish. Drinks well young and rewards five to ten years of cellar time.
