Calderara Sottana (Etna Contrada)
kahl-deh-RAH-rah soh-TAH-nah
Tenuta delle Terre Nere's flagship north-slope cru in Randazzo, with the stoniest soils on Mount Etna and 60- to 100-year-old Nerello Mascalese on volcano-clastic terraces above 650 metres.
Calderara Sottana is one of Mount Etna's most distinguished northern contrade, located on the slopes above Randazzo on the Catania province side of the volcano. The contrada is best known as the home of Tenuta delle Terre Nere (the estate is headquartered at Contrada Calderara) and as the flagship single-contrada bottling for the property. With Bocca d'Orzo and San Lorenzo, Calderara is one of three north-slope contrade described as pure elliptical terroir, deriving from the lava flows and pyroclastic deposits of the Elliptic volcano roughly 60,000 to 15,000 years ago. The vines run from about 600 to 700 metres elevation, with most of the Tenuta delle Terre Nere old-vine plantings sitting at 650 metres on stony, pumice-rich black volcanic soils.

- One of three north-slope contrade described as pure elliptical terroir, alongside Bocca d'Orzo and San Lorenzo, deriving from lava flows and volcano-clastic deposits of the Elliptic volcano roughly 60,000 to 15,000 years ago
- Soils are widely described as the stoniest on Mount Etna: fist-sized fragments of black pumice and basalt over deep volcanic-ash subsoil, with reddish iron-rich pockets in the upper plots
- Vine ages of 60 to 100 years on the Tenuta delle Terre Nere parcels, with a portion of pre-phylloxera ungrafted bush vines (alberello) surviving in the oldest sectors
- Tenuta delle Terre Nere bottles a single-contrada Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso (Nerello Mascalese-led) and a Calderara Sottana Etna Bianco (Carricante), with a 20th Anniversary Anniversario della Contrada di Calderara Sottana cuvée released from the 2022 vintage
- Benanti also bottles a Contrada Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso DOC as one of its four single-contrada Etna projects spanning all four slopes of the volcano
Location and Position
Calderara Sottana sits on the northern slope of Mount Etna inside the commune of Randazzo, in the province of Catania, on the western half of the north-slope cluster that runs from Solicchiata east toward Linguaglossa. The contrada is the headquarters address of Tenuta delle Terre Nere (Contrada Calderara, sn 95036 Randazzo CT) and is one of the seven north-slope contrade in which the estate holds vineyards, alongside San Lorenzo, Bocca d'Orzo, Guardiola, Santo Spirito, Moganazzi, and Feudo di Mezzo. Most of the Calderara plantings run from about 600 to 700 metres in elevation, with the cellar and the 20th Anniversary parcels at 650 metres. The site is north-facing toward the slopes that descend toward the Alcantara River valley, with the long altitude profile that characterizes the entire north slope.

Soils and Geology
Calderara Sottana is described inside the Etna scene as having the stoniest soils of any of the volcano's named contrade. The surface is a blanket of fist-sized fragments of black pumice mixed with basalt rubble, light enough that walking the parcels is a constant negotiation with loose stone. Beneath the stone layer the subsoil is deep volcanic ash with reddish iron-rich pockets in the upper plots. Geologically the contrada is part of the pure elliptical terroir of the north slope, formed by the lava flows and pyroclastic deposits of the Elliptic volcano (the proto-Etna edifice) between roughly 60,000 and 15,000 years ago. Bocca d'Orzo and San Lorenzo are the two other contrade on the north slope that share this elliptical-volcano origin and the same age range. The combination of stony surface, deep ash subsoil, and the absence of the more recent volcanic events that reshaped some neighbouring contrade gives Calderara a distinctive structural signature.
- Stoniest surface soils of any named Etna contrada: fist-sized black pumice and basalt rubble
- Deep volcanic-ash subsoil with reddish iron-rich pockets in the upper sectors
- One of three pure elliptical terroir contrade on the north slope (with Bocca d'Orzo and San Lorenzo), formed by Elliptic volcano deposits roughly 60,000 to 15,000 years ago
- No reshaping by more recent eruptions; the contrada preserves the older Elliptic substrate that defines its structural signature
Wine Style
Calderara Sottana is the cradle of the more powerful and structurally rich Nerello Mascaleses on the north slope. Where Guardiola at higher elevation tends toward tense, austere wines and Feudo di Mezzo can read more open and aromatic, Calderara delivers depth, density, and long-aging structure. The Tenuta delle Terre Nere descriptor for the cru is wide-angle: a wine that contains the broadest spectrum of flavours, aromas, and nuances of any Etna site they work, with the flagship single-contrada Rosso routinely cited among Italy's most age-worthy reds outside of Barolo and Brunello. The Bianco produced from Carricante on the same contrada shows the structural depth of the soil expressed in white, with extended lees aging on the Tenuta bottling. Both reds and whites carry the high acidity, light pigmentation, and floral-funky aromatic profile that the Etna scene is built on, with Calderara contributing the structural backbone.
- Cradle of the more powerful and structurally rich Nerello Mascaleses on Etna's north slope
- Distinct from Guardiola (higher and more austere) and Feudo di Mezzo (more open and aromatic): Calderara is depth, density, and long-aging structure
- Tenuta delle Terre Nere describes the cru as a wide-angle expression with the broadest spectrum of flavours and aromas
- Bianco bottlings (Carricante) show the same structural depth in white form, with extended lees aging on the flagship label

Tenuta delle Terre Nere is the contrada's defining producer. Marc de Grazia founded the estate in 2002 at this address and built its single-contrada cataloguing programme that catalysed international recognition of the Etna cru system. The Tenuta bottlings from Calderara Sottana include the standard Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana, the Etna Bianco Calderara Sottana from Carricante, and the 20th Anniversary Anniversario della Contrada di Calderara Sottana cuvée released from the 2022 vintage to mark the estate's two decades on the slope. Benanti, the Viagrande estate that pioneered the modern Etna revival from 1988 under Giuseppe Benanti, bottles its own Contrada Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso as one of four single-contrada projects spanning all four slopes of the volcano. The two producers' parallel Calderara Sottana bottlings are among the appellation's most direct comparisons of north-slope Nerello Mascalese expression filtered through different cellar philosophies.
North-slope Nerello Mascalese-led reds in the depth-and-structure register: pale ruby, high acidity, light extraction, with flavours running from sour cherry and blood orange through dried herbs, volcanic ash, and a long savoury finish. The Carricante-led whites show citrus pith, white peach, almond skin, and a saline, ash-driven minerality with extended aging potential.
