Domaine Pignier is a Côtes du Jura biodynamic estate in the village of Montaigu in the Sud-Revermont, the southern arm of the Jura vineyard 40 kilometres south of Arbois. The Pignier family has farmed the estate since 1794, building on the foundation of a 13th-century cellar founded by Carthusian monks who first cultivated vines on the southern Jura's foothills. The current 7th-generation siblings (Jean-Étienne, born 1963; Antoine, born 1965; Marie-Florence, born 1968) have managed the estate collectively since 1991. The vineyard covers roughly 15 hectares, all within the Côtes du Jura AOC, planted to Chardonnay, Savagnin, Pinot Noir, Poulsard, Trousseau, and the rare local varieties Petit Béclan and Enfariné. The estate converted to biodynamic farming in 2002 (after Antoine attended a Pierre Masson workshop with Burgundian growers in Beaune) and earned full Demeter certification in 2003. The Pignier family established its estate in Montaigu in 1794, acquiring a 13th-century cellar that had been founded by Carthusian monks. The Carthusians had been the first to plant vineyards on the foothills of the southern Jura, beginning in the 13th century, and the original vaulted cellar at Montaigu remained intact through the dissolution of the monastic estates during the French Revolution. The Pignier family has farmed the surrounding vineyards continuously across the seven generations since, working through the 19th-century phylloxera crisis, the two World Wars, and the post-war restructuring of French wine. Sud-Revermont and the 15 Hectares of Montaigu
Domaine Pignier is the only winegrowing operation in the village of Montaigu, located in the Sud-Revermont (the southern arm of the Jura vineyard) 40 kilometres south of Arbois. The Sud-Revermont is structurally distinct from the northern Jura around Arbois and Pupillin: the slopes are oriented differently, the soils run more strongly to limestone and Liassic blue marls, and the climate is slightly warmer with stronger southern exposures. The cluster of biodynamic estates in the Sud-Revermont (Domaine Jean-François Ganevat in Rotalier, Domaine Labet in Rotalier, Pignier in Montaigu) has driven much of the modern reinvention of Jura Chardonnay since the 1990s. Jean-Étienne, Antoine, and Marie-Florence
Jean-Étienne (born 1963), Antoine (born 1965), and Marie-Florence (born 1968) Pignier are the children of Paulette and François Pignier and represent the 7th generation on the estate. They have managed the operation collectively since 1991, with each sibling taking on different responsibilities while sharing strategic direction. The collective management structure has held for more than three decades and is unusual at this scale of estate. The siblings drove the conversion to biodynamic farming, beginning in 2002 after Antoine attended a workshop hosted by the Burgundian biodynamic consultant Pierre Masson in Beaune. The full Demeter certification followed in 2003. The siblings have also broadened the variety mix beyond the standard five Jura grapes by reintroducing the rare local Petit Béclan and Enfariné, both of which had nearly disappeared from the Jura before specialty growers began replanting them in the 2000s.
