Domaine Le Vieux Donjon

Le Vieux Donjon is a family domaine that produces only Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Vines had always been part of both Lucien Michel's and Marie-José Michel's families, but the domaine took off with their union in 1979: each had inherited family vineyards and know-how. Their children, Claire Fabre-Michel and François Michel, took over from them. Claire has headed the domaine since 2008, and François joined her in 2013. That same year the siblings opened a new tasting room and winery facility on the road to Courthézon, just as you leave the village of Châteauneuf. As of July 2017, Lucien and Marie-José Michel had officially retired.

Claire Fabre-Michel and her brother François Michel run the domaine, having taken over from their parents, Lucien and Marie-José Michel. As of June 2024, Claire was the winemaker. She once worked at Harlan Estate in Napa Valley and in the marketing department of Boisset in Burgundy.

The domaine's vineyards cover 17 hectares in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation and are certified organic. In 2012 it bought a vineyard on sandy soils, which gave it access to galets, clay, limestone and sand terroirs. As of June 2024, Claire was co-planting varieties, mixing the plantings in the vineyards to alter the harvest and balance the crop.

As of June 2024, Claire Fabre-Michel worked in a cellar lined with 50-hectoliter barrels, most of them decades old. She co-fermented all the varieties and aged the wine for 12 months before bottling. In 2007 the Michels kept about 50 percent of the stems, normal for the estate. The 2016 was vinified traditionally with one exception: a small portion was aged in cement vats instead of entirely in foudres, to emphasize the freshness of the fruit.

Each year the domaine makes two cuvées: a Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge and a Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc. The Rouge is typically a blend of 75 percent Grenache with 10 percent each of Syrah and Mourvèdre and the rest Cinsault. The 2016 was 75 percent Grenache, 10 percent Syrah, 10 percent Mourvèdre and 5 percent Cinsault, and 7,000 cases were made. In 2013 Jancis Robinson wrote that the producer 'follows the Clos des Papes model of being based right in the village and not wasting any wine on a special cuvée.'

The 2016 Rouge was No. 8 in Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2018, rated 95 points, with James Molesworth giving a drinking window of 2020 through 2040. By February 2009, the domaine's 1998 and 2005 vintages had both placed highly in Wine Spectator's annual Top 100 listings. In June 2013 Jancis Robinson chose the 2009 as her wine of the week, and that wine featured in the red wine blind tasting paper of that month's Master of Wine exams. In January 2025 La Revue du Vin de France chose the domaine among its winemakers to follow in 2025.

In a 2009 report, Wine Spectator's James Molesworth pointed to the domaine's 'telltale juniper and blackberry aromas' and wrote that the estate 'usually produces a briary, rather backward (when young) grip-filled version.' Wine Spectator's Top 100 entry for the 2016 called it 'one of the most ageworthy and widely available bottlings from this storied appellation.' Jancis Robinson found that the 2009 'has none of the drying tannins that characterise so many of its peers' and was made 'with the sort of gentle hand you would expect of Claire Michel.'

As of October 2026, visits are by appointment, Monday to Friday, from 9:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00. The domaine is on the Route de Courthézon in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
