Dalla Valle Vineyards
Oakville cult producer crafting world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and the iconic Maya blend from volcanic hillside terroir.
Founded in 1986 by Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle on the eastern hillsides of Oakville, Dalla Valle Vineyards achieved cult status when the 1992 and 1993 Maya both received perfect 100-point scores from Robert Parker. Gustav, an Italian-born co-founder of Scubapro diving equipment, died in 1995. Naoko continued as proprietor, and their daughter Maya became official winemaker in 2021. The estate farms 20 acres of volcanic soils organically (certified since 2007) and produces fewer than 3,000 cases annually.

History and Founding
Gustav Dalla Valle, originally from northern Italy where his family had generations of wine involvement, co-founded Scubapro diving equipment before turning to wine. He and his wife Naoko purchased property on Oakville's eastern hillsides in 1982, introduced by real estate agent Jean Phillips (later founder of Screaming Eagle). The first vintage was released in 1986. Gustav died in 1995 just as the winery was achieving cult status, and Naoko took full control.
- Property purchased 1982; first vintage released 1986
- Jean Phillips (later of Screaming Eagle) introduced the Dalla Valles to the property
- Gustav died 1995; Naoko became sole proprietor
- Maya Dalla Valle joined as director 2017, became winemaker 2021
Terroir and Vineyard
The estate sits at 400-450 feet elevation on a geological bench formed by ancient volcanic activity. Iron-rich volcanic soils composed of fractured rhyolite provide excellent drainage and natural vine stress, yielding profoundly concentrated fruit. The eastern Oakville location receives abundant morning sun and afternoon cooling from San Pablo Bay, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to achieve full ripeness while retaining vibrant acidity.
- 20 planted acres on volcanic bench at 400-450 feet elevation
- Iron-rich volcanic soils with fractured rhyolite bedrock
- San Pablo Bay cooling preserves natural acidity
- Certified organic by CCOF since 2007; biodynamic transition began 2019
Flagship Wines
Maya, named after the couple's daughter (born 1987), is a proprietary Bordeaux-style blend of approximately 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Cabernet Franc, first released from the 1988 vintage. It achieved cult status when Robert Parker awarded perfect 100-point scores to both the 1992 and 1993 vintages, making Dalla Valle the second California winery to receive that distinction. Fewer than 500 cases of Maya are produced per vintage.
- Maya: ~55% Cabernet Sauvignon, ~45% Cabernet Franc; fewer than 500 cases annually
- 1992 and 1993 Maya both received 100 points from Robert Parker
- Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon: estate flagship since 1986 vintage
- Collina Dalla Valle: approachable blend from younger vines, ~600 cases

The winery emphasizes traditional techniques with minimal intervention: hand-harvesting, multiple sorting passes, small-batch fermentation, and extended aging in French oak. Maya ages approximately 22 months while the Cabernet Sauvignon receives roughly 20 months, with restrained new oak usage. The wines balance mountain-grown power with elegance, showing ripe dark fruit, architectural tannins, and mineral-driven complexity.
- Hand-harvested, multiple sorting passes for phenolic maturity
- Extended French oak aging: ~22 months for Maya, ~20 months for Cabernet
- Restrained new oak usage preserves fruit purity and freshness
- Total production under 3,000 cases annually across all wines
Why It Matters
Dalla Valle helped establish the Napa cult wine category in the early 1990s alongside peers like Screaming Eagle and Colgin. The winery demonstrated that California's elevated volcanic terroir could produce wines rivaling Bordeaux's greatest estates. Under Naoko's stewardship and now Maya's winemaking, the estate reinforces its commitment to organic farming and generational continuity, setting standards for family-owned winery management.
- Pioneered the Napa cult wine category alongside Screaming Eagle and Colgin
- Validated the mountain vineyard model for ultra-premium California Cabernet
- Second-generation winemaker Maya Dalla Valle represents family continuity
- Organic certification and biodynamic transition demonstrate environmental commitment
Concentrated dark fruit (cassis, blackberry, plum) anchored by mineral precision from volcanic terroir. Maya shows architectural tannins, graphite and slate minerality, and subtle French oak cedar. With age, secondary notes of leather, tobacco, dried herbs, and graphite emerge. The wines balance mountain-grown power with vibrant acidity and refined elegance.
