Colmant Cap Classique & Champagne

Colmant Cap Classique & Champagne is a specialist Franschhoek sparkling-wine house, founded by Belgian couple Jean-Philippe and Isabelle Colmant. The Colmants ran a stone-manufacturing business in Belgium for twelve years before visiting the Cape in 2001, falling for the Franschhoek Valley, selling their business and moving to South Africa. They arrived at their new Franschhoek property in December 2002 with five hectares of bare land (originally part of the 1694 La Motte Huguenot land grant). They planted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards, completed the dedicated traditional-method cellar in 2005 and made their first harvest in 2006. The estate is one of the very few South African producers exclusively focused on the Champagne method, producing approximately 50,000 bottles per year across five distinct Cap Classique blends. The Colmants also import a selection of their own French Champagne into South Africa as a complementary portfolio. Sourcing is strategic: 70 percent of the Chardonnay is grown on the home Franschhoek farm with the balance from the limestone soils of Robertson; the Pinot Noir is sourced from five carefully selected farms across Robertson, Elgin and Stellenbosch.

🌍From Belgian Stone to Cape Bubble

Jean-Philippe and Isabelle Colmant did not arrive in wine through the conventional Cape route. Originally from Belgium, the couple owned and ran a stone-manufacturing business for twelve years, a successful enterprise that allowed them the freedom to consider what they really wanted to do next. In 2001 they took a trip to South Africa, drawn by curiosity and the country's emerging modern wine reputation. The visit changed their lives. They were captivated by the dramatic mountain setting and the French Huguenot heritage of the Franschhoek Valley, and the parallel between the Cape's young wine industry and the deep classical sparkling-wine traditions of Europe sparked a clear vision: they would move to Franschhoek and build a small, focused, classically-styled traditional-method sparkling-wine house. They sold the stone business in Belgium, packed up their life and arrived at their newly-purchased Franschhoek property in December 2002. The land was bare, five hectares of soil with no vines and no cellar, and the project began from there.

🏗️Building the Cellar (2002 to 2006)

The property the Colmants acquired was part of the original 1694 La Motte Huguenot land grant in the Franschhoek Valley, anchoring the new house in deep historical continuity even as it had to be built from scratch. Beginning in 2003, Jean-Philippe and Isabelle planted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards on the five-hectare property and began the parallel construction of a dedicated traditional-method cellar designed from the start for the precise demands of Champagne-style winemaking. The cellar was completed in 2005, providing the gentle pressing, careful tirage (secondary fermentation in bottle), riddling and disgorgement facilities required for serious Cap Classique. The first harvest came in 2006, and the first commercial releases followed shortly after. From the beginning, the project's identity was clear: Colmant would be a specialist house focused exclusively on the Methode Cap Classique, with no other wine produced.

🥂Champagne Method Specialism

Colmant is one of the very few South African wineries that focuses exclusively on the Methode Cap Classique (the traditional Champagne method of secondary fermentation in bottle, riddling, ageing on the lees and disgorgement). The estate produces no still wine and no tank-method sparkling, only true classical method sparkling. This specialisation is unusual at the Cape, where most Cap Classique producers also make a portfolio of still wines, and it gives Colmant a clarity of focus and depth of technical investment that has helped lift the technical quality of the wines into the upper tier of the Cap Classique category. Annual production is intentionally small: approximately 50,000 bottles (4,167 cases) across five different blends. The wines are characterised by fine, persistent bubble, clean dry profiles, careful dosage management and an emphasis on freshness, precision and length over richness or weight.

  • Exclusively focused on the Methode Cap Classique (true Champagne method); no still wines or tank-method sparkling produced

🍇Multi-Region Sourcing for Cap Classique

Colmant's source strategy is unusual in its precision. Approximately 70 percent of the Chardonnay used in the wines is grown on the home Franschhoek farm; the balance comes from the limestone-influenced soils of Robertson, one of the best Chardonnay zones in South Africa (and home to the country's largest concentration of limestone-influenced terroir). The Pinot Noir is sourced from five carefully selected farms across three cool-climate Cape regions: Robertson, Elgin (the cool maritime apple-growing valley behind Walker Bay) and Stellenbosch. This multi-region blending strategy allows the Colmants to combine the textural depth of Franschhoek Chardonnay, the bright limestone-driven acidity of Robertson, the cool-climate purity of Elgin Pinot and the structure of Stellenbosch Pinot. The result is a Cap Classique style that draws on the very best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir terroirs in South Africa and constructs a complex, layered base wine from carefully selected components, much as a serious Champagne house would.

🍾The Range

The Colmant range covers five core Cap Classique blends, all made in the strict traditional method. The Brut Reserve is the flagship Brut: a Chardonnay-dominant blend with significant time on lees, fine bubble, citrus and brioche character and a clean dry finish. The Brut Chardonnay is the estate's Blanc de Blancs, made exclusively from Chardonnay and showing the cleanest, most chalk-influenced expression of the house style. The Brut Rose is a salmon-coloured Pinot Noir-led Rose with red fruit, fine bubble and a dry, mineral finish. The Brut Sans Annee is the non-vintage workhorse, blended for consistency across vintages. The Brut Absolu is the flagship zero-dosage bottling: bone-dry, vinous and structured, intended for serious drinkers who want the purest expression of the base wine without any sweetening. Across all five wines, the house style emphasises precision, fine bubble, restrained dosage and the textural lift that comes from extended lees ageing.

  • Brut Chardonnay: Blanc de Blancs from 100% Chardonnay; cleanest, most chalk-influenced expression of the house style
  • Brut Rose: Pinot Noir-led salmon-coloured Rose with red fruit, fine bubble and a dry mineral finish

🇫🇷French Champagne Portfolio

Alongside the home Cap Classique programme, the Colmants have built a complementary portfolio of imported French Champagne, brought into South Africa under their own distribution. This is a natural extension of the family's deep technical and stylistic engagement with the traditional method: the Champagne portfolio includes selected grower-Champagne and small-house bottlings that share the precision-focused aesthetic of Colmant's own wines, and the family's ability to taste and contextualise the Cap Classique alongside actual French Champagne gives the Colmant cellar door a unique educational character. The combination of an exclusively Cap Classique production programme and a curated French Champagne portfolio positions Colmant as a national reference for traditional-method sparkling wine in South Africa.
