🪨Terroir and Soils

The vineyard's name, Perrière, derives from the French word for quarry, a direct reference to its medieval history as a stone source. The soils are broken and stony, sitting over calcareous clay with a high proportion of limestone. This limestone-rich profile contributes to the vineyard's characteristic minerality. The site also benefits from a warmer mesoclimate compared to other Vougeot Premier Cru plots, a consequence of its sheltered orientation and southeast aspect, which allows for thorough ripening of Pinot Noir.

  • Stony, broken soils over calcareous clay with high limestone content
  • Warmer mesoclimate than neighboring Vougeot Premier Cru sites
  • Southeast aspect provides strong sun exposure throughout the growing season
  • Limestone drives the mineral character notable in the wines

📜History

The Cistercian monks of Cîteaux, who developed much of what became Burgundy's finest vineyard land, used the Perrière site as a quarry to source stone for constructing the walls and buildings of Clos de Vougeot. After the quarrying era ended, the site transitioned to viticulture. In the mid-19th century it was planted with white varieties, a detail that reflects broader experimentation with grape varieties during that period in Burgundy. It was subsequently converted to Pinot Noir, which it grows exclusively today. Domaine Bertagna, its current sole owner, has shaped the vineyard's modern identity as a monopole.

  • Medieval quarry supplying stone for Clos de Vougeot construction by Cistercian monks
  • Planted with white varieties in the mid-19th century
  • Subsequently converted entirely to Pinot Noir
  • Now a Premier Cru monopole held by Domaine Bertagna
