📜From Bastide Farmhouse to Benchmark Cellar

The property at Mormoiron was first restored by René and Odette Bastide in the early 1970s, coinciding almost exactly with the creation of the Ventoux AOC in 1973. Paul and Édith Chaudière took over in the mid-1980s, made the pivotal decision to leave the local cooperative, and constructed their own cellar in 1989. Their first vintage followed in 1990, along with the Quintessence Rouge, a Syrah-Grenache blend that remains a signature cuvée to this day. That founding commitment to estate bottling set the tone for everything that followed, establishing Château Pesquié as the largest private cellar in the Ventoux appellation.

  • Ventoux AOC was established in 1973, the same period the Bastide family renovated the original property
  • Paul and Édith Chaudière built the estate's own cellar in 1989 after leaving the cooperative system
  • Quintessence Rouge, the estate's signature cuvée, has been produced since the inaugural 1990 vintage
  • The estate employs 16 to 17 people as of 2024 to 2025, reflecting its scale as the appellation's largest private producer

👨‍👩‍👧Third Generation at the Helm

Frédéric Chaudière returned to the family estate in 2002, initially to help his father through a health crisis, bringing a background in history and philosophy rather than enology. His brother Alexandre, who trained formally in enology, joined shortly after, and the two have co-led the estate since 2003. That same year marked the beginning of the organic transition. Frédéric also serves as vice president of the AOC Ventoux, giving the family a prominent voice in shaping the appellation's future. The secondary label Le Paradou, created in 2005, extends the estate's reach into a more accessible price tier with three varietal wines.

  • Frédéric Chaudière trained in history and philosophy before returning to the estate in 2002; Alexandre trained in enology
  • Brothers have co-managed winemaking since 2003, initiating the organic transition in the same year
  • Frédéric Chaudière serves as vice president of the AOC Ventoux syndicate
  • Le Paradou secondary label was created in 2005 and sits at a lower price tier than the core Château Pesquié range

🍇Mountain Terroir Across 100 Hectares

The estate's 100 hectares span three villages: Mormoiron, which holds the highest-quality parcels, along with Blauvac and Ville-sur-Auzon. Elevation is the defining factor here, with vineyards planted between 250 and 400 metres on Mont Ventoux's southern slopes. The geological diversity is considerable, ranging from clay-limestone and pure limestone to marls, sands, and clays, and the Chaudières vinify each parcel separately to express these distinctions. Some blocks contain vines approaching 100 years of age, while the estate average exceeds 40 years. The grape mix is led by Grenache at roughly 40% and Syrah at around 30%, supplemented by Cinsault, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Marselan, and a range of white varieties.

  • Vineyards span 250 to 400 metres altitude across Mormoiron, Blauvac, and Ville-sur-Auzon
  • Soils include clay-limestone, limestone, marls, sands, and clays across the 100-hectare holdings
  • Some parcels contain vines up to 100 years old; estate average exceeds 40 years
  • White varieties planted include Roussanne, Viognier, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, and Chardonnay

🛠️Biodynamic Precision, Fresh and Elegant Results

Certified biodynamic under Demeter since 2025, following an organic conversion begun in 2003 and formalized with Ecocert certification in 2018, the estate applies parcel-by-parcel vinification as its central winemaking philosophy. All grapes are hand-harvested, and the cellar employs whole-cluster fermentations alongside aging in neutral barrels and cement tanks, a deliberate choice that preserves freshness and avoids the dominance of new oak. Flagship wines including Artemia age in premium Radoux Blend and X-Blend French oak cooperage. The resulting style is described as fresh and elegant with lower alcohol levels, a notable achievement in the warm southern Rhône climate. All wines are also certified by the Vegan Society.

  • Demeter biodynamic certification achieved in 2025; organic transition began in 2003 with Ecocert certification in 2018
  • Parcel-by-parcel vinification, hand harvesting, whole-cluster fermentations, neutral barrels, and cement tank aging are standard practice
  • Artemia and other flagship reds age in Radoux Blend and X-Blend premium French oak cooperage
  • Vegan Society certified as of 2025, alongside organic and biodynamic credentials

🎯Why Château Pesquié Matters

Ventoux is one of the southern Rhône's most dynamic and undervalued appellations, and Château Pesquié has done more than perhaps any other single producer to establish its credibility. The Chaudière brothers deliver wines with genuine site specificity, certified biodynamic farming, and a fresh, lower-alcohol style that stands apart from many southern Rhône peers. Consistent 90-plus point recognition from Wine Advocate via Jeb Dunnuck has brought international attention to both the estate and the appellation. For students of the Rhône, this producer illustrates how altitude, terroir diversity, and farming philosophy can redefine expectations for a historically underestimated AOC.

  • Recognized as the largest private cellar in Ventoux AOC with 16 to 17 employees and an estimated 50,000 cases annual production
  • Consistent 90-plus scores from Wine Advocate (Jeb Dunnuck) have raised the appellation's international profile
  • Single-parcel wines such as Artemia and Silica demonstrate terroir expression and site specificity rarely associated with Ventoux
  • Pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the appellation, with Demeter certification achieved in 2025
