History and Ownership
Château Fonroque entered the Moueix family in 1931 when Jean and Adèle Moueix acquired the estate. Alain Moueix assumed responsibility for the property in 2001 and immediately set the estate on a transformative path. Organic farming practices were introduced in 2002, followed by a full transition to biodynamic viticulture between 2003 and 2005. The estate earned its biodynamic certification in 2008, becoming the first Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Émilion to hold that distinction. In 2017, ownership passed to the Guillard family, with Hubert Guillard at the helm, while Alain Moueix continues in a consulting capacity.

Terroir and Vineyard
The estate covers 17.60 hectares on a west-facing hillside and limestone plateau within Saint-Émilion. Soils vary across the property, combining clay, limestone, and sand, with the plateau characterized by pure limestone and the slopes featuring clay-limestone compositions. This geological diversity, combined with the west-facing aspect, gives the vineyard good afternoon sun exposure while maintaining the cooling effect that preserves natural acidity. The biodynamic farming approach treats the vineyard as a living ecosystem, relying on natural preparations and lunar cycles to guide viticultural decisions.
Viticulture and Winemaking
Fonroque's vineyard is planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, a classic Right Bank composition well-suited to the clay-limestone soils. The estate's biodynamic farming commitment shapes every aspect of vineyard management, from soil health to harvest timing. Merlot thrives in the cooler clay-rich sections, delivering the wine's plush core, while Cabernet Franc on the limestone plateau contributes structure, aromatics, and freshness. The result is a wine that reflects the precision and vitality biodynamic farming often encourages in the final glass.

Château Fonroque produces an elegant style of Saint-Émilion that distinguishes itself through bright minerality and precise acidity rather than sheer weight. The wine shows grippy, well-defined tannins that indicate careful extraction and serious vineyard work. The limestone bedrock is a consistent presence in the sensory profile, lending a chalky, saline edge that sets it apart from richer, more fruit-forward expressions in the appellation. It is a wine built for the cellar, rewarding patience with increasing complexity over time.
Elegant and precise with a firm limestone-driven minerality, bright red and dark fruit, grippy tannins, and fresh acidity. Merlot provides a plush mid-palate core while Cabernet Franc adds floral lift and structural precision.
