History and Ownership
The vineyard site at Fonplégade has been under cultivation since approximately 400 AD, placing it among Saint-Émilion's most historically rooted estates. The modern property took shape in 1852 when Jean-Pierre Beylot consolidated the holdings into a coherent estate. The Duke of Morny, a prominent figure in Second Empire France, owned the château from 1863. The Moueix family, renowned throughout Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, held the estate from 1953 until 2004. That year, American couple Denise and Stephen Adams purchased Fonplégade and embarked on a comprehensive transformation, prioritizing sustainable and biodynamic viticulture above all else.

Terroir and Viticulture
Fonplégade's 18.5 hectares sit on south-facing slopes within the Saint-Émilion appellation, a positioning that maximizes sun exposure throughout the growing season. The soils form a mosaic of limestone and clay, a combination typical of the finest Grand Cru Classé sites in the commune. Limestone provides excellent drainage and imparts the minerality that defines the estate's house style, while clay retains moisture during drier periods and contributes body to the wines. The vineyard is divided into 27 distinct parcels, each managed individually to capture the nuances of microterroir across the property. The temperate maritime climate delivers warm-to-hot summers, damp springs, and approximately 800mm of annual rainfall.
- South-facing slope aspect maximizes ripening potential
- Limestone and clay mosaic soils across 18.5 hectares
- 27 individually managed parcels for precision viticulture
- Maritime climate with roughly 800mm of annual precipitation
Organic and Biodynamic Certification
The Adams family's commitment to sustainable farming is one of the defining characteristics of modern Fonplégade. The estate achieved organic certification in 2013, just nine years after the family's acquisition. Biodynamic certification followed in 2020, guided by biodynamic consultant Corinne Comme. Biodynamic farming treats the vineyard as a self-sustaining ecosystem, using preparations derived from plant, animal, and mineral materials and aligning field work with lunar and cosmic cycles. For a Bordeaux Grand Cru Classé to hold full biodynamic certification places Fonplégade in a select group within the appellation and signals a long-term investment in soil health over short-term yield optimization.

- Full biodynamic certification achieved in 2020

Stéphane Derenoncourt, one of Bordeaux's most sought-after consultants, oversees winemaking at Fonplégade. His approach emphasizes precision and restraint, drawing out the natural expression of each parcel rather than imposing a heavily interventionist style. The blend is anchored by Merlot at 85 to 92 percent, complemented by Cabernet Franc at 8 to 15 percent. This composition is well suited to the limestone and clay terroir, where Merlot achieves full physiological ripeness without losing freshness. The resulting wines are rich and full-bodied, with a velvety texture, soft supple tannins, and a minerality that reflects the limestone bedrock. Aging potential ranges from 5 to 20 years depending on the vintage.
