History and Origins
Château Bellefont-Belcier traces its origins to the late 18th century, when Count Louis-François de Belcier established the estate. The château itself was built in the early 19th century and named Bellefont, meaning 'beautiful spring' or belle fontaine, in reference to the natural springs on the property. The Faure family took ownership in the 1870s and held the estate for over a century, during which time they constructed the celebrated circular gravity-fed winery. A landmark moment came in 1892 when the estate claimed the sole gold medal awarded to a Bordeaux wine at the Concours Général Agricole in Paris. Major vineyard restructuring followed a change of ownership in 1994.

Modern Ownership and Vignobles K
In 2012, the estate became the first Bordeaux classified growth to be purchased by a Chinese investor, acquired by the Wang Songwei family. Ownership passed to John Renos in 2015 and then to Peter Kwok in 2017. Kwok integrated the property into Vignobles K, his portfolio of Bordeaux estates, making Bellefont-Belcier the seventh acquisition in that group. This succession of ownership brought considerable international attention to the estate and reflected the growing investment interest in Bordeaux from Asian buyers during the 2010s.

Terroir and Vineyard
The 14 hectares of vines occupy south-facing slopes on the Côte Pavie within the commune of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, one of the satellite communes permitted within the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation. Soils vary by position on the slope, with clay-limestone on the plateau and upper slopes, clay-sandy soils at the foot of the slope, and the underlying molasse de Fronsadais subsoil lending distinctive minerality. The southern aspect maximizes sunlight exposure, contributing to the consistent ripeness that characterizes wines from this site. The estate covers 20 hectares in total.

The vineyard is planted predominantly with Merlot at 72%, reflecting the clay-limestone soils well suited to this variety. Cabernet Franc accounts for 17% and Cabernet Sauvignon 11%, providing structural complexity and aromatic lift. The estate's circular gravity-fed winery, a legacy of the Faure family era, remains a distinctive feature of the production facility, allowing gentle handling of fruit without the need for pumping. This approach supports the preservation of aromatic freshness and the development of ripe, well-integrated tannins.
Classification
Château Bellefont-Belcier was promoted to Grand Cru Classé status in the 2006 revision of the Saint-Émilion classification, one of Bordeaux's periodically revised hierarchies. The estate retained its classified status in the subsequent 2012 classification. The Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé designation places it within a select group of estates recognized for consistent quality within the broader Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation.
