📜History and Origins

In 1980, Swiss couple Bruno and Brigitte Widmer visited Tuscany at Christmas and fell in love with the Brancaia hill in Castellina in Chianti. They purchased the property in 1981, comprising a farmhouse in need of renovation and 20 hectares of land. The estate's quality ambitions quickly took shape, and in 1988 the Widmers released the first vintage of Il Blu, a Super Tuscan blend that did not comply with Chianti Classico regulations. The wine established Brancaia as one of the historical Super Tuscan producers of the Castellina-Radda corridor. In 1989, the family acquired the Poppi Estate in Radda in Chianti, expanding their vineyard base into a second commune.

🌿Vineyards and Terroir

Brancaia farms across three distinct Tuscan terroirs. The Castellina estate covers 28 hectares around the original Brancaia hill on classic Castellina galestro and alberese soils. The Poppi estate in Radda spans 12 hectares at higher elevation on cooler, sandier soils suited to longer-ripening Sangiovese. The Maremma estate, acquired in 1998, covers 40 hectares near the Mediterranean coast on warmer Mediterranean-influenced ground. All vineyards are certified organic under EU rules. The combination of Chianti Classico-zone and Maremma terroirs allows the estate to blend cooler and warmer parcels for stylistic complexity, especially in the flagship Il Blu.

🍇Grapes and Winemaking

Brancaia's portfolio centers on Sangiovese for Chianti Classico bottlings and a Sangiovese-Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon blend for the flagship Il Blu. Tre, the estate's accessible Toscana IGT blend, mirrors Il Blu's structure with younger vines and less wood aging. The estate also produces Brancaia Bianco from Sauvignon Blanc and a small range of single-vineyard limited bottlings. Barbara Widmer, who took over winemaking from her father in 1998 and proprietorship in 2007, has emphasized organic farming, lower-impact viticulture, and refined extraction yielding elegant rather than concentrated wines.

💡Why Brancaia Matters

Brancaia represents the modern Chianti Classico estate model: international ownership, organic farming, multi-commune vineyard holdings, and a flagship Super Tuscan IGT alongside DOCG-compliant Chianti Classico bottlings. Il Blu's 1988 debut places Brancaia among the wave of historical Super Tuscan estates that established the category beyond the original Bolgheri pioneers. Barbara Widmer's leadership has continued the estate's quality trajectory while maintaining its distinct Swiss-Italian identity within the Chianti Classico landscape.

Flavor Profile

Brancaia Sangiovese bottlings show classic Chianti Classico character: bright cherry, dried herbs, leather, and fine-grained tannin with notable freshness. Il Blu adds darker fruit, plum, blackcurrant, and softer Merlot-driven texture alongside Cabernet's structure and Sangiovese's acidity. Tre is approachable with similar character at lower intensity. The estate's house style emphasizes elegance, balance, and aromatic precision rather than power or extraction.
