Founding by Alejandro Bulgheroni
Bodega Garzón is the realization of Argentine businessman Alejandro Bulgheroni's vision for a modern, world-class Uruguayan estate. Bulgheroni built his fortune in oil and agribusiness, and brought to the Garzón project the capital, ambition, and timeline that few South American wine ventures have matched. The project began in 2006 when consultant winemaker Alberto Antonini visited Uruguay to assess viticultural potential and reported that Maldonado granite hills could produce vinifera of stellar character. First plantings followed in 2007, and the commercial founding was 2008. Total investment has exceeded 85 million US dollars across the winery facility, vineyard development, hospitality infrastructure, and supporting agribusiness. The property occupies 4,000 hectares with 240 hectares planted, making it one of the largest single-estate wine operations in Uruguay. Bettina Bulgheroni, Alejandro's wife, has been a co-architect of the project's hospitality and cultural identity.
- Alejandro Bulgheroni: Argentine businessman with oil and agribusiness fortune
- Project assessment 2006 by Alberto Antonini; first plantings 2007; commercial founding 2008
- Total investment exceeding 85 million US dollars across all facilities
- 4,000-hectare property with 240 hectares planted on granite hills
Architecture and the LEED Silver Achievement
Garzón's architecture is among the most distinguished in modern wine design. Argentine firm Bórmida and Yanzón designed the winery to adapt to the topography, with a linear and articulated form that sinks the production area into the hillside while extending the hospitality area along a natural balcony. Green roofs reduce solar radiation impact, and native flora integrates the building into the surrounding landscape. Carlos Hartmann, a LEED-credentialed architect, served as project manager and led the sustainability program. In 2019, Bodega Garzón became the first winery in the world to achieve LEED Silver certification across its entire facility including production, hospitality, offices, cellar, and wine club. Renewable energy from on-site wind generation supplies a significant portion of operations. Industrial effluent treatment, native flora restoration, and wildlife corridor management complete the sustainability program. The investment in sustainability has been a defining brand pillar from the project's start.
- Architecture by Bórmida and Yanzón, adapted to the hillside topography
- Carlos Hartmann: LEED-credentialed project manager
- World's first winery to achieve LEED Silver across the entire operation, 2019
- Wind-energy generation and effluent treatment supplement the sustainability program
Terroir and the Granite Hills
Garzón's 240 planted hectares occupy granite hills with Crystalline Basement geology dated to over 2.5 billion years, among the oldest soils on Earth. Granite predominates, with patches of schist providing further complexity. The vineyards sit at 80 to 200 meters elevation, with Atlantic Ocean influence 18 to 20 kilometers to the southeast delivering consistent maritime breezes that moderate summer temperatures and slow sugar accumulation. Diurnal range is wide, with cool nights preserving acidity and aromatic compounds. Annual rainfall around 1,000 millimeters is moderate by Uruguayan standards. Garzón has invested heavily in soil mapping, identifying numerous distinct parcels across the planted area and bottling single-parcel cuvées that demonstrate the terroir variation. The granite-and-schist combination supports the regional emphasis on Albariño and structured red varieties, with mineral lift and tension distinguishing the wines from broader Uruguayan production.
- Crystalline Basement soils over 2.5 billion years old, among Earth's oldest
- Granite predominant; schist patches add complexity
- Vineyards at 80 to 200 meters with consistent Atlantic breezes
- Annual rainfall around 1,000mm, lower than Canelones
Albariño Leadership and the Variety Portfolio
Garzón holds the largest Albariño vineyard in the Americas, planted as part of Alberto Antonini's strategic recommendation that the Maldonado climate could support cool-climate varieties typically associated with Galicia. The Garzón Albariño is Uruguay's most internationally recognized white wine, with consistent 90-plus point ratings from Wine Spectator, James Suckling, and Wine Enthusiast. Tannat is the principal red, with the estate's single-vineyard expressions showing mineral lift from granite and Atlantic-driven freshness that distinguishes them from Canelones Tannat. Petit Verdot, Petit Manseng, Cabernet Franc, and Marselan complete the principal varieties. Alberto Antonini has overseen winemaking since the project began, with the focus on expressing the granite terroir through restrained oak handling, minimal intervention, and parcel-specific bottling.

- Tannat single-vineyard expressions with mineral lift from granite
- Petit Verdot, Petit Manseng, Cabernet Franc, Marselan: significant supporting varieties
