📜History & Heritage

Santenay's winemaking roots reach back to Roman times, with archaeological evidence suggesting early vine cultivation in the area. The commune gained further prominence during the medieval period through the influence of local monasteries, and it has long been distinguished by a dual identity: both a wine-producing village and a spa town, thanks to its thermal springs. AOC status was formally granted in 1937, cementing Santenay's place within the Côte de Beaune hierarchy, with Premier Cru designations following in 1970. Historically regarded as rustic compared to its famous northern neighbors, the present generation of producers has substantially elevated quality, with families like the Muzards tracing unbroken winemaking lineages back to the 17th century.

  • Historically known as both a wine town and a spa resort, owing to Santenay's thermal springs

🗺️Geography & Climate

Santenay occupies the southernmost position among the wine-producing communes of the Côte de Beaune, bordered by Chassagne-Montrachet to the north and Maranges to the south and west. The appellation spans the communes of Santenay and Remigny. Vineyard slopes rise from around 300 metres to 500 metres elevation, where greyish limestone dominates the upper ground. Lower on the hillside, starting at approximately 300 metres, the geology shifts to oolitic limestones, white oolite, marls, and kidney-shaped limestone on layers of marl. Being at the southern, rounded tip of the Côte d'Or escarpment, the vineyard sites benefit from excellent south-facing sun exposure. The 12 Premier Cru sites are distributed across three distinct groups to the north, east, and west of the commune, following the curve of the limestone slopes.

🍇Key Grapes & Wine Styles

Pinot Noir dominates Santenay production, covering approximately 282 hectares and accounting for the vast majority of output. The reds are characterized by a dark, brilliant black-cherry color, a floral and red-fruit bouquet often showing rose petals, peony, violet, and a hint of liquorice, with a deep, intense attack and firm but discreet tannins that give the wine a supple, fine-textured body. Old-style Santenay was once considered rustic, but the current generation has mastered tannin management to produce more polished, elegant expressions. Chardonnay whites, grown across approximately 47 hectares, are clear, brilliant, mineral, and floral with notes of bracken, hazelnut, and citrus, showing freshness and vigor. Premier Crus such as Les Gravières, whose name derives from the gravels, pebbles, and calcareous sands deposited from the Combe de Saint-Aubin, and Clos de Tavannes, a small walled vineyard on the Chassagne-Montrachet border, represent Santenay's most sought-after expressions.

  • Pinot Noir: dark cherry color, floral and red-fruit bouquet with liquorice; supple tannins and deep attack

  • Clos de Tavannes: small walled Premier Cru bordering Chassagne-Montrachet; wines are highly regarded and command Santenay's highest prices
