Montefico
mon-teh-FEE-koh
A tiny, storied MGA in Barbaresco with south-facing limestone soils that produce some of Nebbiolo's most mineral and concentrated expressions.
Montefico is a 3.86-hectare Barbaresco MGA delivering powerful, mineral Nebbiolo from south-facing limestone and marl soils. Located in the Barbaresco commune, it carries historical ties to Domizio Cavazza, the founding father of Barbaresco. Produttori del Barbaresco has bottled it as a single-vineyard wine since 1970.

Location and Setting
Montefico sits within the commune of Barbaresco in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, classified as a Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva (MGA) under the Barbaresco DOCG. The vineyard spans just 3.86 hectares at elevations between 230 and 260 meters, with a south to south-east aspect that maximizes sun exposure across a short growing season. The Tanaro River valley lies nearby, and cooling northern winds from the valley moderate temperatures during the critical ripening period, helping to preserve aromatic complexity in the Nebbiolo fruit.
Soils and Climate
The soils at Montefico are calcareous limestone and clay-limestone layered with marl, a combination that delivers excellent drainage while also supplying minerals that leave a clear imprint on the finished wine. This soil profile sits among the classic Barbaresco terroirs and contributes to the site's signature mineral finish. The continental climate of the Langhe brings warm summers and cold winters, while the moderating effect of winds off the Tanaro River valley tempers the warmest growing-season temperatures and supports gradual, even ripening of Nebbiolo.
- Calcareous limestone and clay-limestone with marl underlie the vineyard
- South to south-east aspect maximizes sun exposure
- Continental climate moderated by northern winds from the Tanaro River valley
- Elevation of 230 to 260 meters aids diurnal temperature variation
History and Heritage
Montefico carries considerable historical weight within Barbaresco. Local tradition holds that the vineyard was once owned by Domizio Cavazza, the agronomist and professor who established the Barbaresco cooperative in the late nineteenth century and is widely regarded as the founding father of the Barbaresco appellation. Produttori del Barbaresco, the cooperative Cavazza helped create, released the first documented single-vineyard bottling of Montefico in 1970, making it one of the earliest cru expressions in the entire Langhe. That bottling set a precedent for single-site transparency that now defines the MGA classification system across both Barbaresco and Barolo.

Open Wine Lookup →Wine Character
Nebbiolo from Montefico produces wines that are powerful and concentrated, often austere in their youth and demanding several years of cellaring before they reveal their full complexity. The limestone and marl soils drive a pronounced mineral finish that distinguishes Montefico from softer, sandier Barbaresco sites. Expect firm tannins, high natural acidity, and a structured core that builds toward dried roses, tar, iron, and dark cherry over time. The combination of south-facing exposure and cooling valley winds creates a Nebbiolo that is both ripe and precise, capable of aging for well over a decade.
- Powerful and concentrated style, austere when young
- Pronounced mineral finish driven by limestone and marl soils
- High acidity and firm tannins typical of Nebbiolo from this elevation
- Develops dried roses, tar, iron, and dark cherry with bottle age
Notable Producers
Produttori del Barbaresco is the most historically significant producer at Montefico, having bottled the site as a single-vineyard riserva since 1970. The cooperative releases Montefico only in declared vintages, which adds to the wine's scarcity and collectibility. Other producers working fruit from this MGA include La Ca' Nova, Carlo Giacosa, and Roagna, each bringing a distinct stylistic approach to the same exceptional raw material. Roagna, known for extended maceration and minimal intervention, produces a particularly age-worthy interpretation of Montefico.
