History and Founding
Manuel María González Ángel established the bodega in 1835 alongside his uncle José Ángel de la Peña in Jerez de la Frontera. The English shipping agent Robert Blake Byass joined as a business partner in 1855, and the company was formally renamed González & Byass in 1863. The iconic La Concha bodega was constructed in 1862, designed by a school of architects associated with Gustav Eiffel. A second major cellar, the Tío Pepe bodega, was built in 1963. The González family consolidated sole control of the company in 1988, and today the business is run across its fifth and sixth generations.

Vineyards and Terroir
González Byass farms 900 hectares of vineyards within DO Jerez-Xérès-Sherry in Andalusia, southern Spain. The dominant soil type is albariza, a bright chalky white soil prized for its water-retention properties, which are critical during the region's hot, dry summers. The microclimate is shaped by the Atlantic Ocean and the proximity of the Guadalquivir and Guadalete rivers, moderated by two contrasting winds: the cool, moist poniente from the west and the hot, dry levante from the east. The region enjoys over 3,000 hours of annual sunshine. The three permitted grape varieties grown are Palomino Fino, Pedro Ximénez, and Moscatel.
