Château Prieuré-Lichine is a Fourth Growth Margaux estate with roots in a medieval Benedictine priory and 77.5 hectares of vines. Rebuilt by wine merchant and writer Alexis Lichine after 1951, the estate grew from 11 to 58 hectares by the 1970s. Today it produces silky, elegant red Bordeaux blends under the ownership of Groupe Ballande.

Origins and History
The estate's story begins in the medieval period, when Benedictine monks established a priory on the site and cultivated vines for religious ceremonies and daily meals. The property passed through various hands until the French Revolution in 1789, when it was seized and divided. For generations the estate remained fragmented, stripped of its monastic identity and viticultural ambition. That changed dramatically in 1951, when American wine merchant, journalist, and future Bordeaux ambassador Alexis Lichine purchased the neglected property and set about restoring it, renaming it Prieuré-Lichine in tribute to both its origins and its new owner.

Prieuré-Lichine holds a unique distinction in the appellation: its vineyards span all five communes of Margaux, giving the estate a mosaic of terroir expressions unmatched by any other property in the AOC. The blend is anchored by Cabernet Sauvignon at 50%, complemented by a substantial proportion of Merlot at 45% and a small contribution of Petit Verdot at 5%.

Modern Era and Winemaking
After Alexis Lichine died in 1989, his son Sacha Lichine managed the property until 1999, when Groupe Ballande acquired the estate. Under Ballande's ownership, significant investment went into modernizing the cellars and refining vinification practices. The appointment of Stéphane Derenoncourt as consulting oenologist brought additional precision to the winemaking, reinforcing the estate's commitment to producing wines that reflect the classic Margaux character of finesse, elegance, and structural balance rather than weight and extraction.
