Château Beychevelle is a Fourth Growth Saint-Julien estate renowned for elegance, finesse, and one of Bordeaux's most storied histories. Sitting on the Beychevelle plateau at 18 meters elevation, the 90-hectare vineyard benefits from deep Gunzian gravel soils and the moderating influence of the Gironde estuary. Joint ownership by Suntory and Castel Group since 2011 has brought significant investment, including a gravity-flow winery completed in 2017.

History and Origins
The roots of Château Beychevelle reach back to the 15th century and the Foix de Candale family. The château itself was commissioned in 1565 by Bishop François de Foix Candale. Its most celebrated chapter began in the early 17th century when the estate passed to Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, the Duke of Épernon and Admiral of France. According to legend, ships navigating the Gironde were required to lower their sails in deference to the Admiral, giving rise to the name 'Baisse-Voile,' which evolved into Beychevelle. The château was rebuilt in 1757 by the Marquis de Brassier and purchased in 1825 by négociant Pierre-François Guestier. The Achille-Fould family held the estate from 1970 to 1986, followed by GMF Insurance until 2011, when the current joint ownership by Suntory and Castel Group was established.

Terroir and Vineyard
Beychevelle's 90 hectares of vines occupy a plateau that peaks at 18 meters above sea level, with a gentle slope oriented toward the Gironde estuary. This proximity to the estuary is a defining feature of the estate, as the large body of water moderates temperature extremes throughout the growing season, reducing frost risk in spring and extending the ripening window in autumn. The soils are deep Gunzian gravel of the Pleistocene period, a highly prized soil type throughout the Médoc for its excellent drainage and heat retention. A clay-gravel subsoil lies beneath, with some sandy zones, providing both structure and a degree of water retention during dry summers.

Winemaking and Cellar
Philippe Blanc has served as Managing Director and Chief Winemaker since 1995, with Romain Ducolomb as Technical Director and Cellar Master. The most significant recent development in winemaking came with the completion of a state-of-the-art gravity-flow winery between 2016 and 2017, followed by the inauguration of new cellars in 2017. Gravity-flow systems eliminate the need for mechanical pumping during the winemaking process, reducing physical stress on the fruit and fermenting must, which supports the estate's signature approach to textural refinement and elegance.
