Alsace Grand Cru status, first established in 1975 for Schlossberg alone and expanded through 1983, 1992, and 2007 to reach 51 classified sites, designates the region's finest vineyard parcels across approximately 1,700 hectares. These ten key crus illustrate how granite, volcanic, limestone, and gypsum substrates create singular expressions of Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Muscat. Grand Cru regulations mandate a maximum yield of 55 hl/ha, manual harvesting, and production exclusively within each delimited site.
- Schlossberg (Kientzheim/Kaysersberg) is Alsace's first and largest Grand Cru, designated in 1975, covering 80.28 hectares of terraced granite slopes between 230 and 400 metres, primarily planted with Riesling
- Rangen de Thann is the southernmost and highest Grand Cru, with volcanic greywacke and tuff soils on extreme south-facing slopes of 80–100% gradient at 350–480 metres elevation

History and Heritage
Alsace's Grand Cru classification emerged from a 1975 decree that recognised Schlossberg, above Kientzheim and Kaysersberg, as the region's first and sole Grand Cru. This was not an arbitrary choice: Schlossberg growers had already agreed in writing in 1928 to restrict yields, and the site had appeared in documents relating to the Kaysersberg castle since the 15th century. A further 24 sites were classified in 1983, and a comprehensive decree in 1992 brought the total to 51, before Kaefferkopf of Ammerschwihr was added in 2007. In 2011, the single shared Alsace Grand Cru AOC was dissolved into 51 individual appellations, each with its own specifications, allowing tighter local management of yields, viticulture, and typicity.

Geography and Climate
The 51 Grand Cru sites stretch from Marlenheim in the north to Thann in the south, positioned on the eastern foothills of the Vosges Mountains at altitudes broadly between 200 and 480 metres. The Vosges create a powerful rain-shadow effect: Colmar, situated near many key Grand Crus, is one of the driest cities in France, recording around 550 mm of rainfall per year. Westerly winds lose their moisture crossing the Vosges and arrive as warm, dry föhn winds over the vineyards, promoting full ripening and, in autumn, the noble rot conditions necessary for Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles. Microclimatic variation across the ten key sites is dramatic: Rangen, enclosed in the deep Thur valley at 350–480 metres, has a notably later bud break than the more exposed and lower-altitude Brand near Turckheim.

Key Grapes and Wine Styles
Four noble varieties are authorised in Alsace Grand Cru with very limited exceptions: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Muscat. Riesling dominates granite and volcanic sites such as Schlossberg and Rangen, producing wines of flinty, smoky minerality with precise acidity and considerable aging potential. Gewurztraminer finds its most compelling expression on limestone-clay terroirs such as Hengst and Goldert, where it produces aromatic, full-bodied wines with lychee, rose, and spice character. Pinot Gris adapts across diverse substrates, from the elegantly structured expressions of Hengst to the more opulent styles suited to late-harvest production. Muscat remains rare at Grand Cru level but is particularly prized on the clay-limestone of Goldert. Dry production is standard, though Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles are produced in suitable vintages and must display strictly higher minimum ripeness levels.

Schlossberg's decomposed biotite granite and gneiss above Kientzheim and Kaysersberg creates Riesling of distinctive saline minerality and citrus purity, with terraces between 230 and 400 metres. Rangen, sitting above Thann on volcanic greywacke and tuff from the ancient Molkenrain volcano, is Alsace's only volcanic Grand Cru, producing profoundly mineral, saline wines of exceptional concentration from slopes averaging 90% gradient. Hengst's Muschelkalk-derived clay-limestone-sandstone above Wintzenheim and Wettolsheim gives full-bodied, powerful Gewurztraminer with a characteristically fresh finish. Brand's pure biotite granite above Turckheim imparts a warm, mineral intensity to both Riesling and Gewurztraminer. Rosacker's dolomitic limestone above Hunawihr is the home of Trimbach's Clos Sainte Hune, among the world's most celebrated dry Rieslings. Schoenenbourg, above Riquewihr, has gypsum-bearing marl-limestone soils that produce structured, ageworthy Riesling with smoky minerality. Sporen and Goldert both sit on clay-limestone, the former above Riquewihr excelling with Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris, the latter above Gueberschwihr being particularly celebrated for Muscat. Zinnkoepflé's sandstone and limestone above Soultzmatt and Westhalten yield aromatic, sun-baked Gewurztraminer, while Frankstein's granite soils in Dambach-la-Ville in the Bas-Rhin produce delicate, mineral Riesling at the northern end of the quality hierarchy.

Notable Producers and Benchmark Wines
Trimbach, established in Ribeauvillé in 1626 and now in its twelfth generation, is the reference for Grand Cru Rosacker through its Clos Sainte Hune, a 1.67-hectare Riesling monopole producing only 8,000 to 9,000 bottles per year and widely considered one of the world's greatest dry white wines. The Cuvée Frédéric Emile blends Riesling from the Grand Cru Geisberg and Osterberg sites. Zind-Humbrecht, founded in 1959 in Turckheim by the merger of two family vineyard holdings and today led by Olivier Humbrecht MW, holds parcels across Rangen de Thann (5.5 ha as Clos Saint Urbain), Brand (2.4 ha), Hengst (1.4 ha), and Goldert (0.9 ha). Domaine Weinbach, working biodynamically on Schlossberg, and Albert Boxler, with parcels on Brand and Sommerberg, are recognised as benchmark producers on granite terroirs. Domaine Schoffit holds the Clos Saint-Théobald in Rangen, while Josmeyer in Wintzenheim produces respected wines from both Hengst and Brand. Hugel, based in Riquewihr, draws from Grand Cru Schoenenbourg and Sporen for its prestige cuvées but historically has not used the Grand Cru designation on its labels.

Wine Laws and Classification Standards
Grand Cru regulations set a single maximum yield of 55 hl/ha for all four permitted noble varieties, a substantial reduction from the regional Alsace AOC ceiling and a figure further tightened at Schlossberg to 50 hl/ha following a 2022 decree amendment. Mechanical harvesting is prohibited; all Grand Cru grapes must be hand-picked. Minimum natural alcoholic strength is 11% for Riesling and Muscat, and 12.5% for Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. The label must state the Grand Cru appellation name, the grape variety (with three exceptions: Altenberg de Bergheim and Kaefferkopf allow blends, and Zotzenberg permits Sylvaner), and the vintage. Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles may be indicated on Grand Cru labels; VT/SGN minimum must weights are set by decree and chaptalisation is not permitted for these categories. From 2011, each of the 51 sites holds its own individual AOC, enabling local producers' syndicates to impose additional constraints such as the prohibition on chaptalisation adopted by Hengst producers since 2003.

Visiting and Cultural Context
The Route des Vins d'Alsace, running approximately 170 kilometres from Marlenheim to Thann, connects the villages at the foot of all ten key Grand Cru sites. Kientzheim and Kaysersberg at the foot of Schlossberg offer medieval architecture and direct access to terraced vineyard walks; Riquewihr, a well-preserved fortified village, sits below Schoenenbourg and Sporen and hosts tasting facilities for numerous producers. Turckheim, the base for Brand, retains its historic town gates and is close to the Zind-Humbrecht and Josmeyer estates. Thann, at the southern end of the route, is the access point for the dramatically steep Rangen hillside, where harvesting is conducted by pickers using harnesses and ropes on slopes of up to 85–90%. Wintzenheim, beneath Hengst, is home to Josmeyer. Alsatian gastronomy, including tarte flambée, choucroute garnie, Munster cheese, and foie gras, provides natural pairing partners for the full range of Grand Cru styles from dry mineral Riesling to richly botrytised Sélection de Grains Nobles.

Alsace Grand Cru whites span a wide stylistic range determined by soil type and grape variety. Schlossberg Riesling on granite shows citrus purity, saline minerality, and a fresh, precise finish, with floral aromatics in youth giving way to deeper mineral complexity after five or more years. Rangen Riesling on volcanic soils offers gunflint, smoky, earthy intensity with a dense, saline palate and exceptional aging capacity. Hengst Gewurztraminer on Muschelkalk limestone delivers full-bodied lychee, rose, coriander, and exotic spice with a characteristically fresh, mineral finish. Brand Riesling on biotite granite shows concentrated stone-fruit and citrus with a warm, salty minerality and good aging potential. In late-harvest formats, Vendanges Tardives wines show caramelised stone fruit, honeyed richness, and botrytis complexity, while Sélection de Grains Nobles reaches extraordinary concentration with dried apricot, honeycomb, and ginger notes balanced by residual acidity. Age development across the range introduces petrol notes in Riesling, deeper honey and spice in Gewurztraminer, and savory tertiary characters in Pinot Gris.
