Geography and Terroir: The Amyndeon Plateau
Amyndeon sits on a plateau in the southeastern part of the Florina district in northwestern Greece, surrounded by the 'three Vs': mountains Voras (2,554m), Vitsi (2,128m), and Vermio (2,052m). At 570 to 750 meters elevation, with an average of 615 meters, it is the northernmost and highest-elevation Xinomavro PDO zone in Greece. Alpha Estate's privately owned vineyard occupies 220 hectares at 620-710 meters, with a northwest-facing exposure and gentle slopes of 5-15%. Two neighboring lakes, Vegoritida and Petron, moderate climatic extremes. The local climate is semi-continental, with cold winters that bring sufficient rainfall and snow to sustain the vines through relatively dry summers. High diurnal temperature swings in summer preserve acidity while allowing phenolic ripeness, and northwesterly winds prevalent year-round provide natural disease pressure control. Sandy-clay loamy soils with neutral pH and excellent drainage stress the vines beneficially, while limestone subsoil enriched with traces of pre-existing lake deposits contributes a distinctive mineral character to the wines.
- Elevation 620-710m at Alpha Estate; PDO Amyndeon altitudes range 570-750m with 615m average, the highest among Xinomavro PDO zones (Naoussa, Goumenissa, Rapsani)
- Semi-continental climate with cold, snowy winters, relatively dry summers, and significant diurnal temperature variation; northwesterly winds characteristic year-round
- Sandy-clay loamy soils over limestone, with low fertility and ideal drainage; limestone subsoil has accumulated traces of pre-existing lake deposits, contributing minerality
- Phylloxera-resistant sandy soils allow ungrafted vines; Alpha Estate's 'Barba Yannis' block (3.71 ha, 647m, planted 1919) is cultivated on own-rooted gobelet-trained Xinomavro
Xinomavro: The Sour-Black Grape of Amyndeon
Xinomavro, whose name derives from the Greek 'xino' (sour) and 'mavro' (black), defines Amyndeon's identity. This late-ripening, high-acidity variety with thick skins and pronounced tannin structure thrives in cool-climate conditions where it develops mineral precision alongside red-fruit aromatics of cherry, dried tomato, and rose petal. At Alpha Estate, two key single-vineyard expressions showcase the variety's range: the Hedgehog vineyard at 690 meters with northern exposure facing Lake Petron and Mount Voras, and the Barba Yannis block, a 3.71-hectare parcel of ungrafted vines planted in 1919 at 647 meters. PDO Amyndeon is also home to Greece's only PDO rosé designation, made from 100% Xinomavro, reflecting the variety's versatility and the appellation's unique cool mesoclimate. The estate also produces whites from Assyrtiko, Malagousia, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay, as well as international reds including Syrah, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Tannat, and Barbera.
- Xinomavro = high-acidity, high-tannin, late-ripening variety; at Amyndeon, produces more aromatic and elegant styles than the fuller-bodied versions typical of Naoussa
- Hedgehog Single Vineyard (PDO Amyndeon): 100% Xinomavro at 690m, named after a locally protected hedgehog species; 12 months in French oak (50% new), certified vegan
- Barba Yannis Reserve (PDO Amyndeon): ungrafted Xinomavro planted 1919, fermented with indigenous yeasts, unfiltered; 24 months in new Allier-Jupilles French oak, then 12 months in bottle before release
- Amyndeon PDO rosé (100% Xinomavro): destemmed without crushing, cold-soaked 12 hours at 5°C, fermented at gradually increasing temperatures, lees stirred for two months
Winemaking Philosophy: Gravity, Precision, and Sustainability
Angelos Iatridis and Makis Mavridis built Alpha Estate around a core philosophy of absolute respect for the ecosystem, the vine-grower, and the wine-lover. The winery, completed between 2001 and 2003 and situated in the heart of the estate's vineyards, exploits gravity throughout the winemaking process to minimize stress on grapes and must. All construction materials are highly inactive and neutral, securing optimal atmospheric conditions for aging. A fully integrated building management system monitors winemaking, machinery, and mechanical functions, including remote monitoring. The estate's sustainable viticulture practices, certified since 2008, include planting at 5,900 vines per hectare using VSP trellis, strict yield management at 0.9-1.1 kg per plant, green harvesting, manual harvesting in 15 kg baskets during the coolest hours, and rapid refrigerated transport to the winery. Native yeast fermentations are used for the estate's most important single-block wines, and all premium Xinomavro expressions are released without fining or filtration.
- Gravity-fed winery design: grapes received at upper level flow naturally downward through fermentation to underground oak cellar for aging, minimizing mechanical stress
- VSP trellis system at 5,900 vines per hectare; yield controlled to 0.9-1.1 kg per plant; green harvesting, manual picking in 15 kg baskets, refrigerated transport to winery
- Certified Sustainable Viticulture since 2008; all wines certified vegan; sold in Greece and more than 40 countries worldwide
- Second generation now active: chemical engineer Emorfili Mavridou (daughter of Makis Mavridis) and assistant winemaker Angeliki Iatridou (daughter of Angelos Iatridis) carry on the estate vision
PDO Amyndeon: Classification and Regional Identity
The PDO Amyndeon zone, established in 1972, stretches across the southeastern part of the Florina district on a plateau in northwestern Greece. It is the northernmost and highest-elevation Xinomavro PDO in the country, with altitudes ranging from 570 to 750 meters and an average of 615 meters. The other Xinomavro PDO zones are Naoussa, Goumenissa, and Rapsani, each at considerably lower elevations and with differing soils and climates. A defining feature of Amyndeon's terroir is its sandy soil, which has resulted in a significant number of self-rooted, ungrafted vines, a rarity in modern viticulture. The appellation produces both red and rosé wines from Xinomavro, and its PDO rosé is the only rosé appellation in all of Greece. The semi-continental climate, unique among Greek wine zones, and proximity to two lakes distinguish Amyndeon's Xinomavro as more aromatic and elegant in style compared to the fuller, more tannic expressions from Naoussa.
- PDO Amyndeon est. 1972; altitudes 570-750m, average 615m; northernmost and highest-elevation Xinomavro PDO zone in Greece
- The four Xinomavro PDO zones: Amyndeon (highest, coolest, semi-continental), Naoussa (slopes of Vermio, Mediterranean-influenced), Goumenissa (Xinomavro blended with Negoska), Rapsani (Xinomavro blended with Krassato and Stavroto)
- Sandy soils of PDO Amyndeon allow many old, self-rooted ungrafted vines; limestone subsoil contributes mineral character distinct from other Xinomavro zones
- Amyndeon PDO rosé = only PDO rosé designation in Greece; made 100% from Xinomavro; distinguished by high acidity, delicate red fruit, and mineral freshness from cool-climate terroir

Food Pairing and Service
Alpha Estate's diverse portfolio offers exceptional food versatility across its range. Xinomavro's high acidity and firm tannins make it a natural partner for slow-braised lamb, roasted game birds, aged hard cheeses, and tomato-based preparations, where the grape's savory, dried-tomato character mirrors the dish. The estate's SMX blend, with Syrah's spice and Merlot's softness anchored by Xinomavro's acidity, suits richer preparations including beef stew and roasted meats. The PDO Amyndeon rosé, delicate and mineral, suits Mediterranean mezze, grilled white fish, lightly spiced dishes, and fresh cheeses. The estate's white varieties, Malagousia and Sauvignon Blanc, complement herb-driven preparations, asparagus, and fresh goat's cheese. Serve Xinomavro reds at 16-18°C with 30 minutes of decanting to open aromatic complexity; the rosé at 10-12°C.
- Xinomavro reds: braised or roasted lamb, rabbit stew, aged Graviera or Pecorino, mushroom-based dishes, slow-cooked game; high acidity cuts through richness and fat
- Alpha Estate S.M.X. (Syrah-Merlot-Xinomavro): grilled beef, roasted meats with herb sauces, hearty stews, spiced sausages; the Syrah-dominant blend adds richness to Xinomavro's frame
- PDO Amyndeon rosé (100% Xinomavro): grilled white fish, seafood in light tomato sauce, fresh goat cheese, roasted red peppers, Mediterranean mezze; serve at 10-12°C
- Malagousia and Sauvignon Blanc whites: grilled branzino, asparagus, fresh cheeses, herbed preparations; aromatic whites mirror herb-driven Mediterranean cooking
