Lebrija VC received official recognition on March 11, 2009, with publication in the Boletín Oficial de la Junta de Andalucía on March 20, 2009. The EU registered it as a Denominación de Origen Protegida on August 1, 2009. As of 2018, it remains the only Vino de Calidad designation in Andalusia after Granada was upgraded to full DO status. Lebrija is the smallest VC and the second smallest DOP in Spain, and since 2021 it also falls under the umbrella of the Jerez-Xerez-Sherry DO, formalizing its long-standing connection to the sherry world.
